Eyebrow transplant: hair direction, natural look and how long the result lasts
An eyebrow transplant re-implants follicular units — most often harvested from the scalp — to rebuild a sparse, scarred or over-plucked eyebrow. What separates a credible result from an artificial one is not the number of grafts, but the angle and direction of each implanted hair: a natural eyebrow follows a direction that changes in each zone (head, body, tail).
General information written by a physician. It does not replace a consultation: the indication for an eyebrow transplant and its feasibility depend on an individual examination.
What makes an eyebrow transplant “natural”?
Naturalness comes down to three parameters controlled graft by graft: the implantation angle (very flat, almost lying against the skin), the directional orientation specific to each segment, and the choice of fine single-hair grafts. The head of the eyebrow grows rather upwards, the body lies outwards, and the tail runs towards the temple. Reproducing these changes of direction is what separates an eyebrow that “blends in” from one that gets noticed.
It is as much a work of design as of surgery. The outline is validated with the patient before the procedure (shape, thickness, curve, relative symmetry — the two eyebrows are never perfectly identical in nature), then each micro-incision receives an individually oriented graft.
How long does an eyebrow transplant last?
The transplanted follicles come from a genetically stable area and stay in place durably: they keep growing for life. The counterpart is that they keep the growth rhythm of the scalp: the transplanted hairs grow about 1 cm a month and have to be trimmed regularly, every two to four weeks. This is not a flaw, but a characteristic to know before deciding.
A long-lasting result does not mean a frozen one: density can change over time, and a touch-up is sometimes useful to perfect the line. Individual variability in graft take exists, as with any transplant.
What is the timeline after the procedure?
The procedure generally lasts between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on the number of grafts, then the timeline is predictable. The crusts fall off in 7 to 15 days; the transplanted hairs shed around the 2nd week (a normal phenomenon, not a failure); regrowth starts around the 3rd month; the result is assessed between 6 and 12 months. This patience is inherent to the hair cycle and must be anticipated.
Eyebrow transplant or microblading: what is the difference?
They are two approaches that do not play in the same league: microblading colours, a transplant restores substance. Microblading is semi-permanent make-up (pigment deposited in the skin): immediate effect, but it fades in 12 to 24 months and requires repeated touch-ups. A transplant implants real hairs that regrow: the result builds up over several months but lasts. For a very sparse eyebrow, only an addition of hairs restores volume and relief.
Who can consider an eyebrow transplant?
The frequent indications are long-standing over-plucking, localised stabilised alopecia areata, scars (trauma, burns), or age-related thinning. One condition matters: the stability of the cause. On progressive alopecia areata or an active autoimmune disease of the area, a transplant is not indicated until the situation has stabilised — a point only a medical examination can settle. It is therefore not a trivial cosmetic gesture, but a procedure that requires a prior diagnosis.

FAQ
FUE harvesting is done follicle by follicle and leaves dot-like micro-marks in the donor area, hidden by the hair. On the eyebrows, the micro-incisions heal into almost imperceptible dots in most patients, but healing remains variable from one person to another.
Yes. As the grafts come from the scalp, they grow at the rate of scalp hair (about 1 cm a month). They need to be cut every 2 to 4 weeks to keep a natural length.
Count on 6 to 12 months. The transplanted hairs shed around the 2nd week, regrow from the 3rd month, then thicken progressively. The mature result is assessed at around 9 to 12 months.
It is performed under local anaesthesia. Moderate discomfort and swelling are possible in the first days; they are managed with the post-operative instructions. No procedure can be presented as entirely free of sensation or risk.
It depends on the area to be filled and the starting density; the order of magnitude commonly ranges from 150 to 400 grafts per eyebrow. The right figure is set at the examination.
